Untangling superposed double layer and structural forces across confined nanoparticle suspensions

The description of forces across confined complex fluids still holds many challenges due to the possible overlap different contributions. Here, an attempt is made untangle interaction between charged surfaces nanoparticle suspensions. Interaction are measured using colloidal-probe atomic force microscopy. experimental profiles considered as a superposition double layer and structural forces. In order independently describe decay force, ionic strength suspension determined by electrolytic conductivity measurements. Jellium approximation used define impact fluid on screening surface potential. There, nanoparticles homogeneously distributed only carried out via particles counterions added salt. follows damped oscillatory profile layer-wise expulsion upon approach both surfaces. extended depletion next confining surfaces, with no present. thickness related electrostatic repulsion from like-charged results show that total independent contributions without any mutual effects. Using this rather simple model describes complete experimentally very well separations few hundred nanometres down being almost in contact.
